Washington Heights is the elevator-building Manhattan neighborhood. While much of the West Village and East Village are dominated by 5-6 story walk-up tenements, the pre-war stock in Washington Heights (mostly 1905-1935 construction) was built with service elevators. Most of the 6-story brick buildings along the St. Nicholas Avenue, Audubon Avenue, and Broadway corridors — and the side streets between them from W 155th through W 191st — have working elevator service. Faster jobs here than the dense pre-war corridor below 181st.
