How much does mattress removal cost in NYC?

Mattresses price by size — that's the only variable that matters, because size is what drives the truck space and the two-person lift down the stairs. Here's the full ladder, every number flat and all-in:

ItemFlat price
Mattress — Twin$111
Mattress — Full / Double$126
Mattress — Queen$139
Mattress — King / Cal King$154
Box Spring (any size)$124
Mattress + Box Spring (set)$192
Bed Frame (any size)$92

$75 job minimum. Every price covers labor, carry-down from any floor, hauling, and recycling/disposal. NYC sales tax (8.875%) is added at checkout. For reference, national cost guides (HomeAdvisor) put mattress removal at $75–$200+ — the wide range is on-site estimating; ours is fixed before you book.

What actually moves the price

The NYC rule that trips people up: you must bag it

This is the part most people don't find out until the truck skips their mattress. If you set a mattress or box spring at the curb for DSNY, NYC requires it to be fully encased in a sealed plastic disposal bag — it's a bed-bug control rule, and it's enforced. An un-bagged mattress at the curb can be left behind and can draw a sanitation violation.

So the "free" DSNY route really means: buy a mattress disposal bag, wrestle the mattress into it and tape it sealed, carry it down to the curb yourself, and set it out on the right collection day. That's fine if you're on a ground floor with time to spare. When we remove it, none of that is on you — we wrap it, carry it down, and take it the same day, bagging rule handled.

How NYC mattress removal prices compare

OptionWhat a queen runsThe catch
DSNY curbsideFreeYou bag it in sealed plastic, carry it to the curb, and wait for your collection day — un-bagged = left behind
1-800-GOT-JUNK & volume haulers~$130–$300Priced by truck space and quoted on-site; a single mattress is "minimum truck" territory
TaskRabbit / gig labor~$70–$160 + disposalThey'll carry it down, but bagging, the dump run, and disposal fees are yours
JunkRabbitFlat $139All-in, photo-quoted up front, same-day, wrapped, carried down, recycled — nothing left to you

DSNY wins on price if you can bag and carry. For everyone who can't (or won't), our flat fee is usually the cheaper and the more predictable number versus a volume hauler's on-site quote.

Where your old mattress actually goes

A mattress is one of the most recyclable big items you own — roughly 75% of it is reclaimable. The steel springs are scrapped and melted down, the foam is reprocessed (often into carpet padding), and the cotton and fiber are baled for reuse. Sent to landfill, a mattress is bulky, slow to break down, and a waste of all that steel and foam. We route mattresses to recyclers wherever they'll take them rather than burying them — at no extra cost to you.
