Almost every other brownstone neighborhood in Brooklyn has stoop-to-sidewalk geometry: stoop directly off the sidewalk, no buffer. Carroll Gardens is the famous exception. The blocks between Court and Smith Streets — Sackett, Union, President, Carroll, 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place, 4th Place — have 30-40 foot setbacks with front yards. Most are still tended by the families that have owned the homes for decades. Olive trees, tomato plants, occasional fig trees with their winter blankets in November.
For junk removal, the front yards are a real advantage. We can park the truck at the curb, drop the back gate, and walk items down a 30-foot path before they hit a sidewalk pedestrian. There's a natural buffer for ASP enforcement (we're not blocking anyone). Most yards have a side path that connects to the basement, so heavy items (refrigerators, washer/dryer pairs) go basement-to-truck without touching the parlor floor.
Carroll Gardens also has a distinct demographic: the largest concentration of multi-generational Italian-American families in Brooklyn, alongside the newer wave of professional families. The brownstones are split roughly 60/40 — old guard / new wave. Job pacing and item profile differ.

Yes — the signature Carroll Gardens deep front yards (the 30-40 foot setbacks unique to this neighborhood) actually make our work easier. We can stage near the front fence and walk items down the path without blocking the sidewalk. The front-yard buffer also gives us more time during ASP enforcement.
Multi-generational Italian-American family cleanouts are one of our most common Carroll Gardens job types. Three or four floors plus the basement and garage. Furniture spanning decades (often the original 1960s living room set still in use), religious items, restaurant equipment if someone in the family ran one, garden tools, decades of preserves.
