DSNY Bulk Pickup vs
JunkRabbit

When free works. When it doesn't. An honest decision tree from the people who'd rather you save money than waste it.

TL;DR. If you can carry your item to the curb yourself, you're not in a rush, and it's a standard piece of bulk furniture — use DSNY. It's free. If the item is heavy or awkward, it's in a walk-up, you're on a deadline, your building needs a COI, or it's an appliance / electronic / construction debris — that's where we come in.

Why we're writing this

Most junk removal companies pretend DSNY doesn't exist. We think that's dumb. NYC residents pay taxes that fund a free bulk pickup service. If DSNY is the right call for your specific situation, you should use it. We'd rather earn the jobs where we genuinely add value than push you into paying for something the city already does for free.

So here's the actual breakdown — what DSNY does well, what it doesn't, and where private pickup becomes the realistic option.

What DSNY does well

Use DSNY if all 3 are true

  • You can carry it to the curb. Items must be at the curb on your collection day by 4am. If you can't physically get a sofa down 4 flights of tenement stairs, DSNY can't help.
  • You can wait. Bulk pickup scheduling typically runs 1-3 weeks out. Appliance Pickup (for fridges, ACs) can stretch even longer. If your move-out is in 4 days, the math doesn't work.
  • It's a standard bulk item DSNY accepts. Sofas, mattresses (bagged), chairs, tables, dressers, dismantled bed frames — yes. E-waste, construction debris, hazardous materials — no.

Use JunkRabbit if any of these

  • It's inside. You don't want to carry a 150-lb sofa down 5 floors. Or you physically can't.
  • You're on a deadline. Move-out, closing, building inspection, baby coming. DSNY's 1-3 week window won't work.
  • It's e-waste or has refrigerant. TVs, monitors, printers, fridges, ACs need separate handling DSNY doesn't do at the curb.
  • Your building needs a COI. DSNY doesn't enter buildings or submit Certificates of Insurance. Doorman buildings and prewar co-ops won't let anyone work without one.
  • You'd risk a fine. Premature curb placement, unbagged mattress, mixed e-waste, untagged appliance = $100+ violations per occurrence.
  • You have a lot. DSNY caps the volume of bulk per pickup. Full apartment cleanouts almost always need a truck.

What DSNY actually accepts and what it doesn't

Yes — accepted in residential bulk pickup (free, with caveats):

Yes — accepted via separate Appliance Pickup (free, requires CFC tag):

Appliance Pickup requires a CFC-removal tag confirming that a certified technician removed the refrigerant under EPA Section 608. DSNY schedules can take 2-3 weeks; if the appliance isn't tagged on collection day, sanitation will pass.

No — NOT accepted at curb (will be left or fined):

The fine math. First-offense DSNY violations for premature curb placement, unbagged mattresses, untagged appliances, or e-waste in bulk all start around $100. If you're cleaning out an apartment and tempted to put 4-5 things on the curb at once the night before sanitation, the fine risk often exceeds what private removal would have cost.

Frequently asked

Is DSNY bulk pickup really free?

Yes. DSNY bulk pickup is free for NYC residents. Schedule through DSNY's website or by calling 311. The item must be at the curb on your scheduled collection day before 4am. There's no fee, no surcharge, no minimum. DSNY is the right call for ground-floor pickups of standard bulk items when you're not in a rush.

When does DSNY make sense, and when does JunkRabbit make sense?

Use DSNY if: (1) you can physically carry the item to the curb yourself, (2) you can wait a week or more for the pickup window, (3) the item is a standard bulk item DSNY accepts. Use JunkRabbit if: the item is heavy/awkward and indoors (sofa, mattress, fridge, treadmill), it's a walk-up building, you're on a deadline (move-out, closing, building inspection), it's e-waste or has refrigerant, your building requires a Certificate of Insurance, or premature curb placement could cost you a $100+ DSNY violation.

Does DSNY take refrigerators and air conditioners?

Yes — through DSNY's separate Appliance Pickup program, also free. You schedule it through DSNY and get a CFC-removal tag (DSNY confirms the refrigerant was professionally removed before pickup; this is required under EPA Section 608). The catch: scheduling can take 2-3 weeks, the item must be at the curb on the scheduled day, and if the appliance isn't tagged, sanitation passes it. If you need the fridge out faster or you can't get it to the curb, JunkRabbit handles the EPA refrigerant recovery as part of our standard flat $171 fridge price.

Does DSNY take TVs, computers, monitors, and electronics?

No — not in regular bulk pickup. Under the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, e-waste is banned from NYC residential trash and bulk collection. NYC residents are supposed to bring electronics to a DSNY SAFE Disposal Event or a manufacturer take-back program. JunkRabbit's flat e-waste pricing includes routing to certified e-waste processors.

Do I need to bag a mattress for DSNY?

Yes. Mattresses and box springs must be encased in plastic before curb pickup. Plastic mattress bags are sold at hardware stores and online. JunkRabbit doesn't require you to bag — we wrap the mattress in our blanket and remove it from inside the apartment.

What about construction debris from a renovation?

DSNY doesn't accept construction debris in residential collection. JunkRabbit's construction debris removal is flat per-truck-load — $175 (1/8 truck) to $895 (full 16-cy truck).

What can I get fined for putting on the curb?

DSNY can issue civil penalties for: putting bulk items out before the legal time window (residential bulk goes out the night before your collection day, after 6pm, not earlier), unbagged mattresses, e-waste in regular trash, refrigerators without a CFC-removal tag, and construction debris in residential bins. First-offense fines start around $100 and escalate.

I'm an out-of-state owner clearing a deceased relative's apartment — can I use DSNY?

Technically yes, but it rarely works. The bulk pickup wait can be 2+ weeks, items must be carried to the curb by someone present in the apartment, and the building's super may not allow staging in the lobby or sidewalk. For estate cleanouts on a probate or closing deadline, a private service that handles the carry-out from inside the apartment is usually the only realistic option. JunkRabbit's Manhattan estate cleanouts run $175-$895 with same-day COI to managing agents.
