The neighborhood splits into Old Howard Beach (the original waterfront blocks south of the train tracks), New Howard Beach (further north), and Lindenwood (the apartment-complex-heavy northern section).
Housing is overwhelmingly detached and semi-detached single-family homes — many with private docks on the Jamaica Bay canals (Old Howard Beach has a network of waterways carved into the neighborhood). Lindenwood has a mix of attached two-families and large garden-apartment complexes (Lindenwood Village).
