Upload Photos & Get Quote →Two Bridges is the small, dense Lower East Side neighborhood wedged between the foot of the Manhattan Bridge and the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge — bounded by Catherine Street on the west, Pike Slip on the east, the FDR Drive and East River on the south, and the surrounding Chinatown / LES blocks to the north. The neighborhood gets its name from the two bridge approaches that frame it.
The housing splits sharply between three eras. NYCHA Smith Houses (Alfred E. Smith Houses, 1953, NYCHA on Madison and Catherine) is the dominant residential complex with multiple high-rise buildings. Prewar tenement walk-ups on Henry, Madison, Cherry, and Monroe house long-tenured Cantonese family households — Two Bridges is effectively the eastern extension of Chinatown's residential overflow. Post-2018 luxury condo towers have risen along South Street despite significant community opposition; these are high-end doorman buildings with freight elevators and managing-agent COI requirements.
Cantonese-speaking crew available on request — the long-tenured residential side of the neighborhood is overwhelmingly Cantonese.
